Park City 2003 -

Sundance 2003 feature film "White of Winter" shows HD Cinema tech success

Jan 20, 2003--

"White of Winter" is the first feature film to be invited to the Sundance Film Festival that was both off-lined and on-lined in High Def 24p digital video using Apple Final Cut Pro software in OSX. Sundance promoted the film stating "Director Robert Saitcyk manipulates light and imagery for maximum effect, turning the beautiful stark landscape of Montana into a vivid hue of its own".

HD Cinema, a bi-coastal production and post services company, provided the Sony HDW-F900 CineAlta high def 24p camera for DP Michael Hardwick. Then, assisted by Ted Schilowitz, HD cinema integrated the new AJA Systems 10 bit Kona HD video card with a Mac G4 Dual 1 GHz CPU with the very latest operating software and driver upgrades. An array of (8) Maxtor Ultra 320 drives provided the fast data rates needed for the uncompressed High Def editing, titles and credits, and color correction all to be completed with the quality needed for theatrical distribution.

Jeff Blauvelt, founder and CEO of HD Cinema gives most of the credit to Robert Saitcyk, writer and director of "White of Winter" and his producer Aaron Rice. "We have worked with dozens of independent filmmakers, but Robert and Aaron were the best at understanding our vision of integrating the newest super high tech HD gear and video board design with powerful but low cost software and hardware tools to allow 35mm quality at digital video costs". "They are skilled in the art and science of using these tools and were able to run with it, completing a HD master that played directly from the digital projection booth in Park City".

HD Cinema provided digital consulting and services for three other features selected by the Sundance judges for screening at the 2003 Festival.
